Rising sea levels pose threat to homes of 300m people – study reported by The Guardian

First of all, shall mention that we’re very in support of fighting global warming and never deny facts of the increase in the average temperature. This article from reputable source published on October 29th of 2019 at https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/29/rising-sea-levels-pose-threat-to-homes-of-300m-people-study attracted our attention for that specific reason, but it looks like some facts are not connecting to the source and wording just made that way to promote sensational discovery. Few numbers had been mentioned on that page: 300 million people will be affected by annual flooding by 2050 and that it is significantly above previous estimate of 80 million referring to the research published  in Nature Communications (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-019-12808-z) on the same day.

Reading through research found few interesting facts those may give us a better understanding of what was discovered in that research. Projection of 300 M is produced by the model with Antarctic instability but we need to also understand that model estimate 250 M living today in the areas those subject to annual flooding. That means current sea level pose threat to 250 million already and rising level will add 50M to what we have today. Keep digging for any previous projection of 80 M or similar number, but now really wondering what it can be related to… The only place where we were able to find 80 M number in the research was median increase of 80M people those occupy the land below projected high tide levels projected with low carbon emission by 2100. That to me pose some difficulties to correlate it with the context where it used: 2050, flood once a year, previous estimate?

With all that we still like The Guardian as a new media but pleas be careful to check numbers with the source…
